Factors That Cause Dry Eyes

Dry eye is a condition when the eyes do not have enough fluids or lubricants from tears. This condition makes the eyes unable to expel dust or other impurities that enter and disturb the eye.

Dry eye conditions can also make the eyes feel uncomfortable. Dry eyes can be experienced in certain situations such as when on an airplane, in an air-conditioned cold room, or after looking at a computer screen and other devices.

A number of factors can cause the condition of the eyes to become dry. Quoting from various sources, here are some things that can be a risk of causing dry eyes.

1. Lack of vitamin A

There is no doubt that vitamin A can support eye health. Eating foods that are low in vitamin A can result in dry eye conditions. To prevent this, you can increase your consumption of vitamin A which is abundant in eggs, carrots, fish, spinach, broccoli or pepper.

2. Aging

In general, dry eyes can be experienced by anyone regardless of circles. However, this condition will be more often experienced as age gets older, especially in people over the age of 50 years. Because the production of tears at this age is decreasing.

3. Smoking

Both active smoking and only exposure to secondhand smoke can also cause dry eye conditions. To take precautions, avoid environments filled with cigarette smoke. If you are an active smoker you should stop smoking. Use nicotine replacement therapy slowly or consult a doctor.

4. Mild dehydration

Dry eyes are often the result of a dehydrated body or insufficient fluid entering. Other symptoms of dehydration are the color of urine that is concentrated, weak, dizzy, to a fast heartbeat. Make sure your body stays hydrated by increasing fluid intake and drinking more water. This certainly can reduce the risk of chronic dry eyes.

5. Exposure to wind

Cold weather and strong wind exposure can cause tears to evaporate faster and result in chronic dry eyes. Use glasses to keep your eyes protected from the wind or dust that can get in and disturb your eyes at any time.

6. Computer screen

Looking too long at a computer screen can cause headaches and eye strain. Not only that, computer screens or other devices also often have an impact on tear production and cause eyes to become dry. If you can’t leave the computer, try blinking more often to reduce dry conditions. Blinking of the eye can lubricate the eye and prevent dryness and irritation
